Rookie Takes: Monaco Grand Prix and Roland Garros
06.08.2026

First, let's talk about F1.

That Monaco Grand Prix!!!! All kinds of chaos, but also heartbreak. I am so so so sooo happy for Kimi! I know people say he doesn't deserve it "yet" because he's too young, it's his first year of having a competitive car, etc. But that's the thing about this sport, of why we love it and why we lose our heads over it. Not everyone who "deserves" it gets to win. The person who wins may not always be the best; it's also the person who gets better luck and takes advantage of random opportunities. Although I have to say, people questioning Kimi's skill - what are you watching? He is so good, despite his relative inexperience to George. If anything, it's just making George look worse. Sure, he's had some terrible luck lately and these are things beyond his control. Still, when it comes to things he can actually control, he doesn't seem like he can take advantage.

So many penalties; that pitlane fiasco was certainly a first, but some pundits say it had something to do with the pitlane being longer this year given the additional team with 2 garages. Their pitlane "speed" was actually measured as distance/time so their instincts might have kicked in and they floored it where they were used to even though there was still 2 garages?

Don't talk to me about what happened to my beloved Carlos Sainz. I just can't. Loving him is a bloodsport, to quote from Raleigh Richie. (A song that I haven't listened to in a while!) When will this pain end? Let it be soon, heavens, please.

And now, Roland Garros, aka "Everyone Thinks This Will Be Their Year"

So many plot twists and surprises for this year's French Open. Carlos Alcaraz injured. Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Elina Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, and other top players with unexpected exits. Novak Djokovic not able to sustain his momentum. This was undoubtedly a very exciting Roland Garros season because for both the ATP and the WTA, a new champion was going to be crowned.

It's been a month already but I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that we got to watch an F1 race! We spent four days at the Suzuka Circuit, watching the practice sessions and even the feature races, attending all driver interview sessions, lining up for merch, and leaning all the way into the chaos and excitement.

Honestly, the highlight of the F1 weekend for us was Thursday. We unexpectedly caught an Aston Martin/Honda event that was about to start, so we waited in line to check it out. To our surpise, it was a small fan meet featuring F1 2009 World Champion, Jenson Button, who was Aston Martin's ambassador this year. We actually got to see him! And even better, because I was wearing an Aston Martin Suzuka exclusive cap, I was selected to get an autograph! Incredibly lucky would be an understatement for that whole afternoon. We got him to sign my cap and my notebook, and the best part? I was even featured on the Aston Martin F1 Instagram page, while I was beside Jenson!

IP Notes: Going to INTA
04.30.2026

Our flight to London is in a few hours! We're leaving the house at 11:00 pm although our flight isn't until 3:00 am, May 1. We're done packing for the most part. I'm so excited! First time in Europe!!!! London, baby! And Scotland too!

INTA will only be from May 2 to 6. I'm looking forward to our second week there; we'll be visiting Scotland (Edinburgh) and going around the city of London. I cannot wait! All the museums, parks, and tourist sighhts I've only seen in the movies! Aaaah.

Our connecting flight is in Dubai. Based on what I've heard from some friends, the airport is operating at normal capacity, so I hope we don't encounter any issues along the way!

"Persuasion" by Jane Austen and "A Weekend in New York" by Benjamin Markovitz

I recently finished Persuasion by Jane Austen, and A Weekend in New York by Benjamin Markovitz. Two very different novels, about widely different things, in eras so widely unlike each other. And yet, the common thread of exasperation runs through both. I didn't expect to find something in common between these two. In fact, I chose to read A Weekend in New York precisely because I loved Persuasion so much, I wanted to read something of a different flavor.

Alas, they had more in common than I thought. Of course, not the longing-for-the-lost-love and seeing-your-ex-for-the-first-time-in-years part, which is the main precis for Persuasion.

The other part of it: the restrained disdain for her family, and the inner thoughts of someone who actually could not stand them, but is bound to them by love, obligation, and duty.

This is precisely what Anne feels for her father and sisters, and to a certain extent, Lady Russell, whom she loves, but also disagrees with on some very important things. She respects them, yes. She will stand by them. But she finds herself still being caught off guard when confronted with the reality that she isn't like them, and she is often tired of dealing with them. She'd rather be in another family's house, she'd rather be with an old friend, she'd rather be seeing her ex, even if it pains her not knowing how he still feels about her.

In much the same way, every character in A Weekend in New York feels suffocated by their family. They are fiercely loyal to each other, no doubt about it. They love each other so much, evidently, by the mere fact that everyone is willing to fly to New York, move their schedules around, stay in one apartment, just to see Paul play the US Open. But the shifting allegiances even in small disagreements, the discomfort brought up by throwaway comments, the dulling ache of wondering "Do these people really know me?" It's all so relatable. Each family has their own language, their own culture. And within that space, every member tries to navigate that the best way they know how, depending on the situation, based on decades of history and knowledge. For an "in-law" like Dana, it was easy to feel overwhelmed, like walking on eggshells. Even with her own husband, Paul. But even for the Essingers themselves, they find themselves stepping on land mines, or catching a lit grenade. Nothing really happens in the book, actually. It's all very interior. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it even more for what it is. Maybe because I share those same thoughts, those same worries. That seeming paradox of feeling exasperated about having to explain myself to people who are supposed to know me, but also feeling at ease to just say what's on my mind immediately - even if it's hurtful - without much thought because they do know me.

On Shuffle: Ariana
04.29.2026

Ariana Grande just announced her 8th studio album, Petal, to be released on July 31. As the girlies on r/popheads would say: THIS IS A POP EMERGENCY!!!!

I am so excited! I have no shame in being an Ariana apologist, her problematic love life notwithstanding. Her albums have given me so much joy, comfort, and clarity over the years. There's too much of my history intertwined with her discography. Her last album, Eternal Sunshine, I enjoyed tremendously, but something about the upcoming album cover makes me feel like I'll love this one even more.

Not that anyone asked, but so far, this is my Ariana Grande album ranking:

  1. Thank U, Next
  2. Sweetener
  3. Dangerous Woman
  4. Positions
  5. Eternal Sunshine
  6. Yours Truly
  7. My Everything
Let's see where Petals will fall in this line-up. Ok, brb time to listen to her entire discography - again.
Plot Points: The Spider-Man Effect
08.11.2026

We went out to watch the new Spider-Man movie this weekend, and boy, I was both surprised and not surprised at how well this movie is being received. Surprised, because wow, how is it possible that it's on track to overtake Avengers: Infinity War at the box office? And I thought there was superhero fatigue?

Then again, this is Spider-Man we're talking about. He will always shatter expectations because everyone just seems to love him. We watched on its second week, and yet our theater was packed. Kids, adults, grandparents. All ages covered. Spider-Man resonates with everyone. This really shouldn't be a surprise.

The compelling thing about Spidey has always been the burden of being both Spider-Man and Peter Parker. The weight of being a superhero and an ordinary young adult just trying to get by. And it seems never-ending. Just when he believes he has finally attained some kind of balance, the rug is pulled out from underneath him, and he has to battle it out all over again. It's like Sisyphus, condemned to push the immense boulder of great power and great responsibility up the hill, only for it to always come crashing down.

And almost always, he has to deal with this alone. He traipses and trudges on by himself. He learns to embrace the burden as a gift, and we, the audience, learn to embrace the ups and the downs of seeing him struggle and, eventually, win.

"the reward for good work is having made good work. the prize, if there is one, is that somebody witnessed it and felt moved by it. or that it made their life better. or a hard day easier. the trophy is the feeling you had while making it, that you knew you had to wake up tomorrow to continue it. and then you did."
